Awkward Moments Series IV explored the perceptual phenomenon of the neurological dysfunction Kinetic Synaesthesia. Mixing audiovisual content to trigger the dancers’ performances, questions into the relationship between the body and the mind were raised to explore the concept of ‘muscle memory’ and thus the extent of our awareness of our own movement. Travelling through the six chapters of a life cycle – Genesis, Blossom, Maturity, Decline, Death and Revival – the performance was imagined and created by Mimi Xu in collaboration with legendary dancer, choreographer, and mime artist Lindsay Kemp. Best known for his 1974 mime and musical interpretation of a Jean Genet novel ‘Flowers’, and a mentor to David Bowie & Kate Bush; this was his last performance before his passing. The piece also featured Renée Stewart, Waddah Sinada and Lily McMenamy, and was made into a short film.
