With sound at its core, Awkward Moments is a collaborative performance art series that uses mixed media to explore the emotional, philosophical, and metaphysical implications of a lifecycle and the eternal recurrence of it.
Born out of the concept of ‘Expanded Cinema’ – a term coined in the mid-1960s by American experimental filmmaker Stan Vanderbeek that describes work both inside and outside of the gallery including live performance, projected pieces, video and a range of media environments – Awkward Moments explores the relationship between sound, space and scenography. The theory of Eternal Recurrence is also central to Awkward Moments – probing questions about the cyclical nature of existence, never aiming to repeat, but always returning to the primary concerns of fluidity and transience. The essence of the project is to capture the ephemeral nature of existence through live performance.
Awkward Moments represents a unique voice in contemporary and immersive performative art. The live shows always inhabit the edginess of experimental art presentations, but are firmly rooted on the solid foundations of their multifold crafts ranging from music composition, scoring, narratives, live performance, costuming, videography and projection content.
First launched in London in May 2017 as a fundraising event for refugees, collaboration and inclusivity are at the heart of Awkward Moments, always seeking to encourage diversity by mixing artistic disciplines, musical influences, and sonic practices to create one unified experience.
